Diploma in hands, cap thrown in the air, it is time for new beginnings. However, life does not come with a map. How can we really know that we are making the right career choice after college? While there is no one size fits all answer, there are ways to make sure that you do not rush into a career just because you think it is the right thing to do after graduation.
Take time for yourself
Many people do not make the right decisions after graduation, simply because they did not take the time to discover themselves. In order to make the right career choice, it is important to know your strengths, weaknesses and abilities. Taking time for yourself might be taking a leap year, volunteering or traveling !
Try different part-time jobs
Trying different part time jobs can be a great eye opener. We all want more experience. We all want to add lines to our resume. However we often find ourselves stuck between a diploma and no experience. Trying different part time jobs will allow you to gain experience while searching for your dream job. If you only focus on that one full time job you think you need, you will end up impatient and frustrated. Instead, focus your energy on acquiring knowledge and experience.
Work for free
While many people think that making 6 figures right after graduation is the definition of success, working for free can be a great way to shape yourself for success. When you work for free, you are more focused on the WHY. Since there is no real money involved, you have the chance to develop your abilities ad see what works with your personality. Working for free also increases our sense of responsibility and makes us more accountable. It is great for people to know they can count on us to respect our word even when there is no prize involved.
Do not be afraid to try things outside of your field
Always think outside the box. It is one thing to learn something in college, it is another to penetrate the real world. You will realize that there is so much to learn, so much to discover and so much more than what your little eyes might have seen facing the screen in marketing class. You will realize that what you’ve learned in college is just enough to help you reach higher levels. It is not because you studied marketing that you wont end up in writing. It is not because you majored in communications that you wont work in fashion. Do not limit yourself to what you have studied in your books. The world is a big place and is only waiting for you to open new doors!
